Pingel install...

Jarney, you don't think the pingel fuel tap filter is good enough?

I really want to run with no restriction as I am now with the stock tap.

Got everything together....Got bike started and went for a ride...stopped at the gas station and filled up with 89...

Bike runs like $hit.....Idle seems a little rough and when I do roll-ons, it spits and sputters, then hesitates, then goes....When it reaches redline it flattens out and falls on it's face...When I roll throttle back a little (like we did in Ohio), it jumps **** near out of my hands with a power increase...

I am really at a loss...I thought I cleaned the carbs good...I flushed the pingel out with good fresh gas, before feeding the carbs...I flushed the new fuel line out too...

One thing I noticed and should have taken a picture of...When I had the carbs off, the sync screw for syncing #4 (Paul had to turn it 6 turns to get the guages to read in sync) is way way different than the other ones...The other ones look even but this one is way off..Now when I look at the butterflies inside and the prgression circuits, they look even...

I really truly dont know what to do...

I really think we went the wrong way with the main jet. When you roll off the throttle at high rpm and get that surge that tells me you are getting too much air for the amount of fuel. The amount of fuel you are delivering is at max capacity at that RPM and you are restricting the airflow to to richen the mixture.
Don't beleive me? Get a roll of duct tape and tape off 1/3 of your snorkel, make another top end run and see the difference. When you see what I mean then go get yourself a 130 main no shims.

Do not pay attention to anything but the high end at this time. I don't care if you have to push it to 9000 rpm.

bill ,sent you a message back..have you tried a shop vac to check the diaphragm response on each carb ,,rick

Good point Mark, the inline filter is probably not necessary. I'm just a worry-wart when changing things like this around - it just seems like if anything did get past the Pingel filter, with as much fuel as it flows, it would definitely create problems in the carbs.

I was also going to mention the #2 vaccuum thing - I almost forgot to plug it off myself....

One other thing I've noticed - and it may just be the way I have mine oriented, but if you take the tank off and set it on a bench without anything under the rear tank mount, the tank will rest right on the "on, off, reserve" lever and not on the base of the petcock itself. I usually keep short 4x4 pieces of wood around to jack up the rear of any tank I'm messing with anyway, but just a word of caution on that part.

Anyway, here are a few pics I took, you can see the dreaded "figure 8" shape of the stock filter:

Taped off the intake like you said Mark...My snorkel is all cracked up so I pulled it out and just covered the hole...Took it for a ride...

120mph....no lack of power....I scared myself a couple times because the road had slight curves and at 110mph I got on the shoulder a couple times....at 120 there at the end, I felt a slight hiccup....then I slowed down due to that and lack of road/traffic ahead...As soon as I started slowing down the bike lost power...I thought WTF????

Bike died and I coasted to the side of the road thinking I just broke the darn thing....Well...I was outta gas....switched the pingel to reserve and got it started. From there to gas station it ran good...I filled up (bout 2 gallons) with premium and looked at the pingel (I thought) and flipped the lever....I took off down the road and a couple miles later, it started to die again I thought W.T.F.??????.....it helps when you get familiar and know which way is on and which way is off...I had flipped it to off......Dumba$$

Anyway, I am gonna go to Kawi and get some 130 jets as I see this solved my problem...I am gonna pull the carbs to do it and give them a good going through again...just for grins..

p.s......my idle also improved when I went to 2.5 turns out with the idle screws versus the 2 1/8 that I had just set them....

Well, the good news is there are no fuel leaks (yet - hahaha) with the Pingel or the metal line I put in. I didn't get a chance to do any top end runs today, just ran it up and down the highway to make sure everything was ok and try out a different experiment - read other thread. At least at 55 or 60 mph, I see no difference in the way it runs - so that is at least a good thing - meaning no drawbacks as of yet on the metal line and inline filter - knock on wood. Rain is heading this way so hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to get up to speed and see what happens. Later.

Ok, went out and played around a little this morning. Due to the **** poor roads and the corn being up - unable to see traffic coming at crossroads now, I couldn't go WFO for very far. I hit 110 or 115 a few times and the thing felt like it was still pulling really well. So I really don't see any fuel restriction woes with this set up. I'll keep trying to find some better, longer roads and let you know if I ever find a hiccup in the setup - maybe a run down the interstate will do. Otherwise, I'll leave it setup like it is now. I'm looking to check the mileage next and see when I have to switch to reserve.

Later.

You should have to switch to reserve after you use 2 gallons....I am sure in your case that will be at 75-80 miles....For me it is 41-43 miles....just got to work and I was at 43.5 miles when it stumbled and I reached down to flip to reserve..It picked back up instantly...If I go get gas right now, I will need 2 gallons to fill...So I am getting about 21 mpg....I dont think it matters what I do to this bike, I am not gonna get 40 mpg like so many say they get...When bike is warm now it feels like it is loading up at idle...kinda gurgly, untill I goose throttle once or twice....I still have tape partly covering the intake...Jets not here yet..

OK, I think you guys are bad luck with the fuel leaking problems. I came home from work this morning and while putting one bike away I smelled gas. I looked at the bike I was riding and could not find anything leaking. As I was about to go in the back door I looked at one of the ZL's that was covered up and yes you guessed it. There on the cement was a puddle of gas. I took the cover off the bike and fuel was dripping from the air box. Looked at the oil sight glass and it looked overly full. Pulled some oil out and it smelled like gas. I then noticed gas dripping from the #1 header pipe and also under neath the bike. The amazing thing is that this all happened while the bike was just sitting there. I rode it 2 days ago to work and no problem. Getting tired of this so I had to break down and order the pingel set up. I'm not sure which one Jarney ordered but I got a different one than Willie posted up. The one I ordered was Valve #6211ch and the adapter #1702c. Will have to wait a few days for everything to get here but then I will be rid of the crappy *ss stock fuel valve. for those who are wondering, the cost was $103.55 plus shipping.

Cool!!!!

I am finally in the habit of shutting it on and off....I went through stages where I remembered to shut it off, then jumped on the bike to leave without turning it on..

Now I remember...Reserve is easy to find too...if I feel it start to sputter I just reach down and ease it forward a little them it picks back up...

All this bad luck was from me....

Willy

Can't remember which part number mine was but it looks like a Hex nut. As for the mileage and reserve - I haven't had the chance to run through a tank of gas yet - I've been Jynxed again!!!!!! hahahaha. This time it's starter problems...........ugh..........Later.
