Here's the result of the factory petcock not sealing and float valve not sealing. See the bent #1 conn rod? ...well known problem on these motors and it's called hydro-lock. This bike really sounded like something was banging in the valve area.... Compression check revealed #1 was low. Oil pressure normal so we decided it was time to take the top end off and have a look and save from looking in the oil pan.....As Jimmy Carey said as The Mask...."Hold on to your lugnuts, it's time for an overhaul!" :laughing7:

Yeah, it was another meeting of the minds in Akron this week at ZLMarks' place. My swap bike went back to pull the counter-balancer out that was left in there when the connie motor was installed a year and a half ago. For anyone that has been following it, we didn't know at the time that when swapping a connie motor in, you must either remove the counter-balancer or provide an oil feed hole in the ZL oil pan that will provide constant oil to the balancer. Since I've put about a thousand miles on the motor before I found out and parked it until it was opened back up, I thought it best to just take it out because I can't tell how much wear it received in the interim. Very tedious operation getting the balancer out but did and all is right once again! Mark and I put tires on a BMW he has possession of at the moment and went riding Thursday evening for awhile to check 'em out good........all is great!! Thanks for having me Mark.......I had a great time there this week!

**** marks garage looks almost exactly like mine !!!

whole heard o bike jamed in there, same tool box, same shelfs full of parts, same lift.... looks like mine is a bit smaller though

Next time you guys meet up, send me a pm. I'm itching for another long road trip and an opportunity to learn something about these bikes. I'm also looking for an excuse to top my 500 miles in 24 hr ride =)

I'm glad you were able to figure out the problem, Furchin!

Finally got started on this project. About 2.5hrs to get the motor on the work bench....

You can see pics of the dial-a-jet kit installed on here. After removing this I can tell you that i'm not at all impressed with this setup....I can see this setup available on eBay real soon :laughing7:

Keep 'er going buddy. I have compiled a small list of parts that I may need to complete the rebuild and will get in touch or try to email it to you so you can verify the list.
What is pic #6 of? Can't figure that one out.

Thats looking in to the back of the airbox, you can make out how filthy the K&N filter is. will need a K&N recharge kit

Well got the rod out, time to get a parts list goin!

You can see where the piston was hitting the crankshaft. Glad mudrunner recently split his crankcase and informed us all the mistake in the GPZ9 manual!

The front sump screen was clear but the rear one doesn't look very good.

The alternator chain tensioner rod is bent. Gotta get with the maker of the *fix* for the rod stop and see if it will work on this one with the bent rod

Mark are you sure that rod on the tensioner isnt broken it looks just a tad short in the pic?

It didn't look like it??? I don't have one to compare to. It's gonna need a new one, I'm getting in touch with Kwick to see if his fix will work on this one.....

Yep I tried to spray some cleaner and compressed air in it, that stuff is in there good!

Kwick who is the maker of the alt chain tensioner sleeve that bacchus supplies says that they are all bent like that. This particular ones guide is chipping away, so it needs replaced regardless. I think I'll add the sleeve to the new one to prevent the tensioner chipping away at the clutch basket in the future.

I will have to disagree!

There is one more 8mm bolt in the cases that needs to come out, right smack in the middle next to the other 2 8mm bolts
