Rust Removal.....Inside tank

I'm not sure if etching would be any benefit over this stuff. Rust is gone, and as long as I don't rinse it with water it will stay gone. The website above talks about getting gas in to keep it from flash rusting.

I just wanted to share how I am cleaning the rust from my tank. I built a tank rotator that turns the tank at 23 RPM, I poored a big carton of BB's in it as well as some 3/8 steel balls. It almost sounds like a washing machine when it is running. I elevated one end to make the balls do the lower part of the tank. It is pretty easy to make, I used some short 4x4 and made the main frame, then I took a piece of 3/4 electrical conduit and cut it on one end so it would slide over the shaft on the gear box and clamped it with a u-bolt style clamp. I formed a bracket and welded it to the conduit so I could bolt the tank on with the 2 front holes and just welded a bolt to the couduit for the rear mount. The pictures were taken when the tank was turning. The motor is bolted to a piece of plywood and it simply pushes against the 4x4 frame because of the belt tension. It didn't take that long to build, just a couple of hours, including the time it took to figure it out. I am going to let it turn this direction for a couple of hours and then reverse the motor and let it run that direction for another couple of hours. I really don't expect to see a spec of rust when it is done. Two hours of turning will equal 2760 turns, that should completly pulverize any rust in the tank. Here is a link if you care to see it in action, http://www.youtube.com/v/uBXZtLKMV2Q&hl=en sorry no sound, trying to figure this all out.

As I suspected the rust is gone, the olny place I can see a trace of rust is were the seams were welded together. Other than that it looks it looks like it was sandblasted inside. "Too Kool"

Ok if your in a hurry this may sound like a very abstract way of dealing with this. I just did it and it worked great. It might sound a bit crazy bu the proof is in the pudding.I wanted to wait for the evaporust. But I bought two jugs of toilet bowl cleaner and a bag of aquarium stones. I dumped both toilet bowl cleaner alnog with the rocks. Everything was removed pepcock float , everything. I covered the holes with the best thing possibel. Then I would shave this everywhere around the tank for fifteen minutes. Let it sit for fiftten and repeet that process several times. Theni Added gas took out the plugs and started swishing it around the same way. This time till the rocks came ot. There are a lot of rocks so you may be mixing some gas and shaking the ricks for awhile. Anywise it turnedout great

When I repainted a harly that I had ,one of the tanks was leaking on the back side ,at a weld spot.I took it to a radiator shop that puts this red coating in the tank.It has a life time guarante. They had a display on the shelf ,where they had smashed the tank with a sledge hammer till the tank split and this red stuff still held and did not leak.I think it was like $70 bucks.
I also like the por15 it works great on rusty parts, but I have never used it on a tank. :good luck:
I just had this done to my tank, the local dealer sends them out to a radiator shop to have it done, said it was epoxy resin. The guy said that the tank would only ever rust from the outside-in with this stuff.

That is pretty cool Imysteryman! What is the gearbox from?

Where are you in Illinois? Make a trip to Indy this weekend and hang with us!

Hi Wuputt
I found the gear box at an industrial salvage yard near hear, if I remember right it was in a metal box and was used as some kind of gate opener. It has a 60:1 gear ratio. Thanks for the invite, I might take you up on that some weekend in the future.
Imysteryman=John I been using this mystery name for quite some time now, I figured we are all somewhat a mystery online thats why I went with it.

Start planning a trip to Ohio for Mid Ohio Vintage Days!

If anyone would be interested I would be willing to clean their tank of rust with the tank rotator I made. It take several hours and I would be willing to do this for $100 if they would be willing to pay for all the shipping cost. I just thought I would make the offer to help someone out.
