I have a slight coating of rust inside the tank. Furchin recommended the CLR or The Works to remove it. I really want to avoid creaming, I don't think the rust has ate into the metal yet. I ran across a product this moring at Harbor Freight called Evapo-Rust www.evapo-rust.com Looks like this stuff may do the trick.

Opinions?

IVE USED EVAPO RUST ON A TANK LAST FALL I SOAKED IT FOR A WEEK AND EVERY DAY SHOOK IT UP. THE TANK HAD SOME PITTING IT WORKED PRETTY GOOD .IT SHOULD BE FINE FOR SURFACE RUST

Not to hijack the thread, but I've got a similar question. I'm currently having a tank repainted, and the inside of it was kreemed along time ago, and it looks like it's peeling along the top, just inside where you can see it, I'd hate to see what the bottom looks like. What should I do? Strip it again and rekreem, or just kreem it again over what's left? Any suggestions? I could just leave it alone and hope it holds up, not sure what to do at this point! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the por stuff is a one shot cover all solution i didnt have to clean out the tank just removed the petcocks sealed with tape kept the filler cap open poord it in swished it around drained and left to dry job done.

erm whats creaming?

and this may be a stupid suggestion cos I haven't tried it but it just came to me like an epiphany could you enamel the inside of the tank?

AO Smith (american company) make vitreous enamel lined steel water heaters - dont see why you couldn't do a tank it would last forever then with no rust although it might be a problem if the tank were dented :detective:

How many gallons did you use?

I sent you my phone# give me a call gremlin!

When I repainted a harly that I had ,one of the tanks was leaking on the back side ,at a weld spot.I took it to a radiator shop that puts this red coating in the tank.It has a life time guarante. They had a display on the shelf ,where they had smashed the tank with a sledge hammer till the tank split and this red stuff still held and did not leak.I think it was like $70 bucks.
I also like the por15 it works great on rusty parts, but I have never used it on a tank. :good luck:

I forgot to say that the reason I went this way,was because the harly tank had been creamed and was peeling from the inside.Once that stuff starts peeling you almost have to cut a hole in the tank to get it all out. :good luck:

I had the same thing happen to my zl1k tank. I had to buy two gal. of Keytone (I think)to get rid of the old Kreme. I then re-Kremed it and seems to be holding up ok. Had I known then what I think I know now I would have chosen a different product.
I don't recommend Kreme products anymore!

What product do you use to strip out the old creem?

I have heard of guys having a radiator shop boil it out.The only drawback is I think the stuff they use to clean it out, will mess up the paint, and decals. If you are painting anyway, then there is no problem :good luck:

I believe what I used was Keytone, it is like a very strong paint thinner. Cost was about $20 per gal. and I used two. I used a 2' length of chain, make sure you use welded chain anout 1" links. Took me several days to get all the old Kreem out! PITA

Update:

This stuff really works! I'll need to buy more as 1 gallon won't allow me to soak the inside hump over the frame.

Here are some before and after of the filler neck are with an over night soak.

Here are the final pics of the inside of the tank. Looks pretty good. I'll flush out the remainder of the Evapo-Rust with some gasoline before installing on the bike, don't want to use water to avoid flash rusting.

Does the Evapo-Rust have an acid etch added to treat the bare metal for rust prevention?
