Case Guards, Anyone?

VERY late to this party as I just bought a ZL1000 but I am looking for a set of case guards. I'm trying to eventually be able to mount some highway pegs as I'm hoping to get some trips in.

If you wind up making more or if someone sees this and wants to sell theirs or anything like that, please let me know.

Thanks all!

I feel sorry for any of you that want these and have to have them shipped. You are missing out on meeting a very nice gentleman. Thanks so much Steve for making these! The construction is beautiful and it's BUILT. I'm on my second coat of primer right now. I'm spraying mine flat black. (I'm not a big shiny/chrome guy)

I can't wait to get it all ready and put it on! :headbang:

Steve is THE MAN! :notworthy:

Not to dictate, but you should consider the semi-flat thats the same sheen on the engine. Also easier to upkeep.

That's actually what I wound up with. Put 2 coats of primer and then two coats of the semi-flat. Looks pretty good for an amateur. Can't wait to get em on! Maybe Wed. I'll take pics when I get em on.

I put my case guards on this weekend. Was pretty easy once I figure out what was what. I didn't know that when you take out the bolts that there is a piece in the back that has the threads so when it dropped to the ground, I was a tad confused. (Didn't take me but a second though.)

Have to drop the radiator to get those little buggers back into place. Also plan on buying longer bolts. I went to Home Depot and got #8 bolts with 1.25 pitch thread and 60mm. Worked like a charm. It went together with minimal fuss after that.

I also used a floor jack to raise the engine a little since it will "slump" slightly in the frame when you take the bolts out.

All in all I think it took me 1.5 hours including the trip to the store which is pretty good for me because I'm a MECHANICAL IDIOT. (Means it will probably take anyone else about 10 minutes to do. LOL)

Love em! They're BEEFY! A couple of friends of mine are making some custom highway pegs for bikes and I'm getting one of the first sets for free. Perfect timing I say!

Thanks again Steve! :notworthy:

Steve, too much work doing it that way. Did you check out the tech doc posted with the instructions for case savers?

If you're talking to me, no, I didn't know there was a tech doc. I just thought it didn't look too bad with only 4 bolts so I went at it. :rotf:

Instructions.....BAH! Who needs em! ;)

P.S. Everyone should be not dumb like me and read the tech doc so they know about the floating nut thingy that will fall off if you take both bolts off at the same time which will then require you to drop the radiator to get those little buggers back on! Don't be a dummy like me!

Thanks for the heads up!
I did a teardown in the last few months, and was going to put my radiator and case guards on tonight, but after reading this, I'll have to read the tech doc!

****!! I love this site!!

If any more are made I''ll take a set just PM me Thanks! Jay

Hello, I will be fabricating 3 sets tomorrow, I have one set sold and a second one tenative, If you are wanting a set please PM me ASAP.

Thanks, Steve :headbang:

Don't know who ordered the other two sets but I did get mine yesterday Steve......thanks for letting me in on this run too. To tell you the truth, I haven't even opened the box yet and will just store them as is until I need them since the other three sets I've gotten in the past were fine and I'm sure these are the same. This gives me two of Steve's sets and one NOS OEM set in reserve now......guess I should buy some more ZL's!

I am thinking about it, I will let you know.
If I knew there were more interested , that would help.
