pingel petcock needs vaccum?

The valves are relatively easy to do...IF you take your time...I forgot what an art it is, but if you follow the instructions in tech, you'll be fine...I went through mine...then went back and ran through them again. Bike runs amazingly good. You can do it...like I've said before, if this goof can do it, you can 2.

My offer still stands, so once we get through the cold and snow, you need to ride it over to my son's, since he is 2 miles from OSU and we can help you out with any questions/concerns you might have.

Thank you so much, i did not want to impose on you. Please let me know when its a good time for you/ warm enough.

Is there anything else i should check / replace other than valves?

Apologies in advance if you've already done this; have you tried opening the gas cap when it starts acting up? I read that you had made sure the tank vent was clear, but when the cap is closed the venting is done through the cap and that can get plugged. In reviewing this thread, it wasn't clear to me if you had gone this route.

Also, may want to try a piece of clear tubing from the petcock to the carbs; may give a little visibility into what's going on. While I wouldn't recommend running it that way forever, the stuff you get from someplace like Home Depot should be fine for a couple weeks. I use it on a pony tank when working on the bike with the tank off; it doesn't deteriorate or leak, just hardens after a while.

Hey guys, i just spent the day with Ernie or "rammy". He helped me so much! We discovered that as i expected there is no vaccum ciming from the #2 carb, but the #1 and #4 does. We checked for leaks around the carbs with wd40 and didn't find any, so the #2 is a bit of a mystery. What we did find was a major leak in the tubing that comes from the top of the engine. We temp patched them with nickels and electrical tape and told me to ask you guys abiut hiw you blocked off these vents. Next i have to replace the spark plug lines and flush the coolant. Thanks again! Ill post pics next

here is the cracked tubing we found, and the nickel patches

or valve stuck? check the compression?

No, he said no pulse (suction) from #2 carb. Might have to break the rack down to really get into that carb. I know ZLMark had a clogged choke tube at some point. Not common but it does happen that things can get clogged up.

Yea, I got that BUT, the suction comes from the piston and if the exhaust valve isnt closed it can suck the wrong way! Or, god forbid, a hole in a piston......just sayin...easy was to tell, pull the air filter and cover the #2 carb intake with your fingers, should suck like a 3 month old calf! If not, the valve cover needs to come off to investigate!

I got ya. Wuputt is right. Do that before breaking down rack.

I do want to know how you know about the suction from a 3 month old calf....

Come on if there was a hole in the piston that thing would smoke like a train...

i hate working on bikes on the compt....:BangHead: take the carbs off send them to Rick and that way you know its NOT the carbs...

I was out of pocket the rest of the weekend so couldn't respond. But got there Friday evening and the bike would turn over but wouldn't start. So wanted to make sure the petcock was fine, so tested it with my vacuum pump and it tested fine. It's not a pingle, just a regular petcock that Markus rebuilt for him. So put the tank back on the bike rerouted the fuel line so it was a straight drop to the carbs, put it on prime and it fired up but ran like crap, vacuum leak. Everthing was plugged off since he was running pods, so looking at the reed covers the PO had routed the two hoses and clamped together, but was dry rotted and cracked bad. So pulled the hoses and plugged with nickles and tape until he can find out a better was to seal the reed covers off (or buy block off covers). So started the bike and she fired right up and purred, but after a few minutes, died as if running out of fuel, when you switched to prime fired right back up. That's when we discovered no vacuum on carb two, 1 and 4 had good vacuum but nothing on 2. Didn't have a compression tester with me or we could have check. Also sprayed W-d around the carb boots to check for vacuum leaks, nothing. So ran the vacuum off of carb one, plugged carb 2 until that problem gets resolved, then I took it around the block. Ran smooth and great for me. I did noticed and John did as well that the tank had been worked on and creamed. I explained how the tank venting work, but I only have 900's in my stable, so a little perplexed on the 1000 tank. Also noticed 3 little holes drilled in the dog house and under the dog house into the tank, I assume to help with the venting. So I recommended a few other items to fix and headed out. John called me after a little bit and said it ran fine but died on him on the freeway, like it was running out of fuel again, so again, I'm assuming tank venting issue and recommended he open the fuel cap next time it happened to see if that fixed it. And like I said, was out at the family farm with no cell phone or internet the rest of the weekend. So here is what I think needs to be done.

Resolve tank venting issue.
Figure out why carb 2 has no vacuum
Flush out radiator
re-route throttle cable and get a return cable installed. (revs up when hard turn to the right)
Kickstand switch is by-passed.
replace spark plug wires (has new spark plug caps, using original wires. (do one coil first then fire it up to make sure you have a good connection before doing the other coil and two wires)

I would be relutant sending the carbs to Rick until the tank venting and creame issue is resolved. In the petcock test and watching the clear fuel line, never did see any particles in the fuel. But if something is getting by would hate to have it get into the freshly rebuilt carbs.

I will admit this was the 1st 1000 I ever rode and like the setup with the bigger tank, seat, etc. and just seemed to be smoother riding and shifting. If I wasn't making two tuition payments to OSU then one would be on my must have list.

I would be concerned about holes into the tank like that, the purpose of the elaborate venting on the bikes is to prevent gasoline from escaping; not just to make your life miserable [though the venting does tend to do that]. If the tank is filled all the way, you could end up with raw gas on top of the tank that could drip down on the engine or, even worse, in the case of an accident it would be dumping gas everywhere. May be plugged by Kreme on inside, definitely would want to check that out; if for no other reason than Kreme'd tanks tend to come undone with age.

Definitely recommend opening the cap; also would try the clear tubing to check the flow at the same time. If it's a fuel issue, whether venting or other, the clear tubing will tell.

Im thinking of either getting a new tank or trying to unplug the bottom vent. What a hassle.
Thanks again to rammy, you sir are a gentleman and a scholar :D

The tank is part of the concern I have, three holes drilled to help it vent better? No vent hose was connected on the bottom, so I explained where it needed to run and to check this site for the thread on the 1000 tank venting issues. I'm thinking the #2 carb, no vacuum, must be in the carb itself, because when I took it for a spin it ran and sounded great. And trust me, I know the difference when a bike is running on all 4s or not.

So John, make the fixes I recommended and see how it runs and if still acting up let me know. Like I said, I go past your place every few weeks or so and don't mind stopping by to help and have a beer.
