I've been told by my local tuning shop that my carbs are shot, runs rough on part throttle and they can't tune it out, is there a direct replacement for these from another bike for instance would a set from a zxr1100 fit , I guess the gpz900 ones would go straight on but as usual finding a decent set is proving difficult, is there a list of replacements that I could get to make the search a bit easier . Thanks in advance, ps I'm based in the UK.

Gpz900's are 34mm compared to the ZL's being 32. The ZG1000's(Concours) are the same 32mm as the ZL900. I've used them before as a direct plug and play. If there is any difference in them besides not being black like the ZL's are, I don't know what it is. You could also talk to Wicked ZL here on the forum to see if he has a set you could buy outright. He is the resident guru around here on these carbs. Good Luck!

Thanks for that, however I think the zg1000 is even rarer over here than the zl but at least I can add it to the search, thanks again ;-)

ZG1000 is a GTR1000 over the pond.

Aha now I see, though it looks like this is going to be a long search , I would buy a rare bike wouldn't I lol. Thanks for the help chaps .

Martin you're right w/ zxr; as I was told the 1100/1200-carbs work when replacing main jet w/ the ZL9-ones and doing adjustment (can be PITA). Hard to get them in coz not much place. Henrik from Denmark did it (he is now a HOG...), have a pic of his "recarbed" ZL9 somewhere - will post when found.Later.

That's brilliant, I can actually get a set of those quite easily, would love to see the pics, cheers mate.

So Martin, attached the ZRX(!) carbs pic; as you can see they sit very close to the ZL9 airbox, no simply plug'n'play. To change the main jets w/ the orig. ZL9-ones is only a suggestion, AFAIK the ZRX has main jet size 95 so maybe something between 95...125 will work (110?). When you got your bike running well, please share your experiences - that's what this forum is for. Good luck!

Wow that is one beautiful bike, will definately update the progress when and if i can locate the carbs , thanks so much for the ideas and watch this space ;-)

I don't know what he finally got for the beauty, still remember an advertisement of DKK 65.000 (~ $US 9.812); point is: you will NEVER EVER get back what you once invested in blood, sweat, tears & money. HDs you can get on every corner, this ZL is unique...I cannot share his decision.

Ok latest update, I have managed to buy a set of nearly new in the box GPZ900 carbs, just waiting for the post man. any idea what needs to be done to make them work on the old girl? or have i made a mistake??
:headbang:

I would agree your last sentence, but I think member paulfun (& others?) knows much more bout carb handling.

:hello: If your bike is stock you most likely need to jet them down a bit. Start at what main jets & pilot jets are in your stock carbs. I have a set of 36 mm carbs from a 1987 GPZ 1000 & the pilot jets are the same size as my ZL 1000. Also you will need the larger diameter carb to motor boots.

Just for4 curiosity,,,what would put on 'no expense spared'.

What size flat sides would you use?...Keep small to keep the bottom end torgue?
