Thanks to several of you (Ian and Paulfun, particularly), i was able to change my waterpump a few months ago. Now i have a new problem - a leak from the metal (inlet?) tube where it connects to the pump. I took everything apart and back together - made sure it's all tight, but it still leaks. Then i took it all apart again and stuck a rubber o-ring on it and tightened it up again - no better. I'm hesitant to try putting Permatex around it. Any suggestions?:help:

You dont want silicone getting into the waterways!!!!!!

Did you use the right size o-ring?

If you are going to try any kind of a sealer use some Indian head or brush on of some type

I'm sure it was the right size o-ring. The thing that gets me is that it didn't have any sealant, washer or o-ring on it originally when i took the old pump off. I can't figure out why it doesn't seal up.

Is there an o-ring inside the pump inlet, in a groove? Can't remember, I haven't had mine off in awhile.

No, the pump inlet is smooth; the inlet hose fits inside it and has a ring on it that snugs up to the outside when it's tightened. I put an o-ring up against that ring on the tube to see it that would help it seal up. It was there that i thougth i might try some permatex on the outside, against that metal ring.

Usually when O'rings leak it is due to being cold (they contract) or they were not fully seated correctly.

My suggestion is take it apart one more time and put a light coating of vaseline on the o'ring. Most O'ring manufactured today are safe for petroleum products and by doing this it will help it seat fully.

Don't over due the amount of lube because you don't want it to get into the coolant system (not sure of petro by-products can break down coolant).

Do that, and then start 'er up and run up to temp...If it still leaks maybe the pipe is worn excessively. You could take the pump back off and get a micrometer and measure the diameter of both parts.

Good luck!

671B2525 25mm o-ring

I bought a waterpump kit from georgefix(i think) on ebay. The kit included the outer shaft housing o-ring, the impeller cover o-ring, and the water pipe 25mm o-ring. This kit(or OEM parts) would be needed along with the oil seal, coolant mechanical seal, and 2 sealed bearings to completely rebuild the pump.

I had corrosion on the pipe or the pump and I knew it would leak so I cleaned it up real good and put a little sealant(sparingly!) on it when re-assembling. 2-3 years later all is well!
