Main jet on carbs?????

Ketone should get that crap out.
Got the petcock back from Marcus last night, looks like a brand new one! Thanks marcus! Gonna take some more advice and clean the sealer out of the inside of the tank and then use evaporust. looking on the site for what it is that cleans the sealer off. Hopefully have that done before the carbs come back.

I think I read mek and ketone are the the same thing? I'm gonna get some this afternoon. Does the soaking process take hours, days or what? I think that i have read different things on that. I have to be gone a day or two at a time every third day and am not sure about just leaving it sit there for that long.

a word on MEK. That stuff has some nasty fumes...(or the military grade of the stuff did) be careful! As a very young (read that "stupid") Airman in the U.S.A.F. I darn near took myself out breathing that stuff once.....

I'm not in Georgia but in SC

Much good luck!

Just got the word that the carbs are done! Should be in the mail by tuesday, maybe on the road by the end of the week! Everything is good so far!

About got it finished. Just trying to make sure I haven't missed anything. It should be ready when the carbs get here. Road time!

WOOOOOOHAAAAA! Just got the carbs on and lines replaced. Put gas in and Walah! Doesn't even sound like it is running rough. Gonna let it warm up a bit then put the seat on and go for a spin. Many thanks for all of the help, I like to turn a wrench but couldn't have done it without the help1 Let you know how she does....

That sense of accomplishment 'ya get is great isn't it? Glad to hear it Phil......Enjoy!

100% great! That is such a FUN feeling to start riding that ZL you've been working on so long! Glad you got it running

Got it on the road, a little spluttering when put under a load, but that seems to have died down. Both tires need replacing, hopefully today after the mandatory meeting at work. The speedo is not working, will have to figure that out. I got on it for a bit through second gear, probably gave it about 80%. The radiator started boiling, guess I need to change out the radiator fluid. It looks ok, don't know how long it has been in there though. Did some pretty easy riding for about 1 1/2 hrs yesterday evening and when we stopped the fan came on every time. I don't remember this being normal? Anyway, she is running good, just have a couple more things to take care of, and that is part of the fun, right?

I know it sucks to think about having to tear back into it, but if it was me I would replace the thermostat and the radiator cap if you dump the fluid to change it. You would also need the thermostat O ring (available from the dealer) when doing the thermostat....Neither is a hard or expensive job...

Welcome to the site! I live in South Carolina and make trips down to Florida to see family often. I wouldn't mind making a day trip to your neck of the woods for an afternoon cruise.

I'm glad your bike is running well again. Rick did an amazing job on my carbs, and one of these days I'll send my petcock off to get renewed as well. The members here are always helpful and full of knowledge!

Hey Shoji! That would be great! We are leaving for South Carolina this am for a graduation at Fort Jackson. my stepdaughter, what a barbi girl! Never would have believed it. let me know when and maybe we can meet in the middle. I ordered tires yesterday and will do them and the radiator makeover when I get back. Didn't I read of something other than antifreeze to put back in there?

A lot of guys are using Engine Ice. You can also do a flush with a vinegar mix. Search the site for those words and you'll find some info on it. Later.

Military graduation for the daughter went great! Family reunion the same. Most all of the family left from the reunion left this marning for their part of the country....... Now back to business! Got new shinko rubber for the front and back, not installed yet. I haven't called around yet, any ideas on a reasonable price to put them on? Gonna do a viegar flush/rinse for the radiator and either engine ice or antifreeze (which I already have) and maybe a thermostat. I saw a price for the thermostat for $30, is there a good way to tell if mine needs to be replaced or not? I got on it just a little last time I road it and I could here he fluid boiling........ I didn't think that was normal. Gonna change the oil and I guess there is transmission fluid needs changed too. Gonna check the threads for that now. Let you know how things go.

I haven't changed the t-stats yet in my bikes, I assume they are original. Sounds like you need a new radiator cap. No trans fluid, it's all in the crankcase. There's 2 drain plugs

Search the site, there's regular automotive thermostats [Stant if I remember correctly] that will fit the ZL perfectly. Replacement is no big deal, pull the tank and the housing is right there. Also, there's a regular auto radiator cap that will fit, as well as auto hose replacement numbers. If you've got everything drained, might want to consider the hoses. Probably around $25 for all at an auto store. Main thing is to make sure that you get all the air out of the cooling system, need to bleed by the waterpump [thread search again! :)]. Also, not sure if your question was answered about the fan, it often comes on after the key because the bike has a hi-temp and lo-temp thermostatic coolant switch, the lo-temp is active when the key shuts off and will give the bike a cool down if needed. Should shut off within a few minutes.

Around Chicago it's approx $45 to install a tire.

Got the tires on for $80 for both. Prices started at $160 to install and worked down (slooooowly) until I found a shop for $80. Going out to flush the radiator now, checking the threads so I dont have to do it over. Broke one of the seat bolts off in the seat and didn't have to hard of a time getting it out. is the dealer going to be the only place for replacement bolts or does home depot carry the size?
