I recently acquired a non running complete zl1000. I think it's going to be a bit over my head to get it road worthy. Wondering what it might be worth. I'm in Northern Illinois...
Thanks,
Jon

Depends on all kinds of things, I've paid as little as $300 and up to $500 in the Chicago area for ZL parts bikes.

Is motor frozen, is the tank dented, are the horn covers there, are the speedo and tach good, is the radiator shroud intact, what kind of mileage, what condition is the exhaust in, does it have pods or the original airbox, is there a clean title?

As mentioned, post up some pics and answer the above, it will give people a good starting point.

If you'd like to discuss on the phone, send me a PM and I can reply with my phone#.

Having trouble uploading pics on mobile will attempt again when I get home.
Bike has 10880 miles, hasn't run in several years but has been garaged for most of the time . It's missing the left mirror. All four turn signals are snapped at the stalks, tank has light rust inside. Otherwise everything else is there.

here's a few pics. to those members who PM'ed me, I would probably lean towards selling it whole, but if I'm wowed by an offer for a particular part, I will consider piecing it out.

By the looks of it I would think its not in as bad of a condition as you think.

Probably be worth fixing rather than parting out.

I would try to get it started before making a decision.

Save it or sell it to someone that knows how to fix it please. A few ideas for ya:
Ask members within trucking distance if they can go over it with or for you for a reasonable price.
Take blind bids with a fixed sell date thru pm on the board. (No auction fees and you have your Target audience).
If you part please give me a shot at the exhaust..but don't part it. You will not be dissapointed if you get it running again. Good luck with watever you decide to do.

i would stick a good battery in it and see if she will fire. working on these bikes is not really hard plus you have this forum to bounce questions off of and all the resources in the download section.
i am sure the carbs need to be done and there is a member here that does them for $200.00.
as far as parts they can be found or worked around.
restoring an old bike is accually fun and it teaches you a lot that can be transferred to other issues you will come across in the future.

That poor thing sure has been neglected but it's low mile, complete, and not too far gone yet so I say save that rare bird so she fly once again! There are a few of us on here that would be interested in it and could bring it back to it's former glory. It would be a shame to part such a complete bike.......don't do it! :no-no-no:

IF you'd like me to look at it, drop me a PM, I'm in southwest 'burbs of Chicago.

Another question, does it have a clean title?? Makes a difference if someone does buy the whole thing to restore...

You can fix it. This forum is amazing, and the community support you get is out of this world. I have never worked on a bike, or ANY motor of any kind, and after a little study, small investment in tools and manuals and the odd little part, I have done way more to my 96 zl600 than I thought myself capable. That one is an older one so you probably don't even need to buy manuals, you can download here for free! So rewarding to fix things yourself and ride something you take pride in.

Sell it whole or keep and fix. You will regret parting it out. There is a few parts that will make money leaving you with an almost complete bike thats worth scrap price.

Imagine how much bigger that smile would be in pic #9 if you were whippin that Kaw at about 90 mph! :laughing7:
FIX IT AND RIDE IT BRO!!! If I can work on mine, trust me...you can too!

+1

There is another person in the Schaumburg area that tried parting his out last spring, sold the popular parts and then ended up with a hulk. Frame motor too hard to ship, tires and rims about the same. Still has the rest of it.

People look at what others have asked for parts/bikes and go off the advertised price, not realizing that a lot of times those prices were reduced considerably to actually complete a sale.

not sure what I want to do with it yet.... I should probably have golddrakul come out and look at it before I decide anything.

Thanks to everyone who's offered advice and opinions, I will take all of them into consideration.
