back this spring i was having trouble with my headlight going off whenever it felt like it.well,i feel stupid but i overlooked something while diagnosing it.i had pulled all fuses and relays, cleaned contacts, rewired the headlight, got another reserve switch, still didn't fix it.well,i got messing around with the 3 relays in the fuse box.i couldn't get the headlight to turn on,so i swapped the relays around. i swapped them around and then it wouldn't start.so i swapped it back and it started but still no light.swapped it back again and beat on the relay while holding the starter button and after a couple good raps it started.so,there you have it.
checked out ronnies.com and it's 50.00 for the relay #27034-1006 hope this helps somebody! shawn

Man, $50, for the tiny round silver relays? Anybody got any cheaper alternatives. I was having some similar issues last winter. Sometimes the headlight would come on, sometimes it wouldn't. And sometimes it would go off while I was riding, when I hit a bump, or for no apparent reason.

I have a few spare relays now, but it would be nice to know where to get some new ones cheap.

Surprised. Relays very rarely go. I have never had relays go out on my bikes . Even the 1973 H2's I own

Question, on my ZL900, occasionally the headlight will dim. No rhyme or reason to it, usually it will only last a few seconds then brighten back up. Could it be one of these round relay thingamajiggys going out???

My guess SS is not a relay unless the contacts are wearing out...check your grounds or even the regulator...

someone tear the relay apart if there isn't a diagram on the outside. Follow the connections to the wires and report back. A relay is a relay is a relay providing its wired correctly and the connection fits.

Sorry I think info as to how its wired may be in the wiring diagram.

looks like they are used in some foreign cars like 96-98 subaru legacy and toyota.the denso # is
056700-5260.honda cycles use them too.so if you have a buddy with an old v65,steal it when he's not looking and go riding! also, i work @ carquest so i'm going to look into it.i'post any infi i get.

interesting.... was riding with my brother the other day and about five munites out the headlight shuts off, we pull over shut it down, restart, headlight is back...few munites of riding, out again, shut down restart, and its back........

relays in fuse box ya say....

there are three of them obviosly one has the head light, what do the other two do??

I have a zl9 that will only start if the bike is in neutral AND the clutch is depressed.....hmmmm

I think on the 1000 these are black/square, can't remember. But any 12 volt relay with the same pin config should work. I would definitely look around before spending $50 for a relay. There was a reference to a Radio Shack relay on Concours.org.

the bottom 1 is the start relay, the lh is light, the rh is main.you can get them through parts stores.carquest #83109 for the economy or 56-1692 for the premium.napa # is ar-355.all less than twenty bucks.

When needed I have bought my relays for the 1000 at radio shack for approx. $4.00

I think the numbers are listed in the tech doc about 1000 fuse box relays. But I can give you the part number here also. 275-005a, I have been told that the newer lots of these relays may not contain the small (a) at the end.
