I'm new to the page and hope I'm posting this in the right place. I came into an 85 ZL 900 recently. I didn't realize they were of a special breed. I am liking the obscurity of them. I feel like I got something no one else in the area has. The question I have is exhaust gaskets where all the pipes connect....where can I find them or what can I use in there place???? I had plans to customize the bike but after nosing around on this page and seeing what everyone has to say about them I think original is the way to go. I'm just getting started on it so I will have a lot more issues to bring to the table. Thanks for any help I can get.

Long story-short...An army buddy is living in a spare room in the house until he retires he traded it for a Ranchero. Brought it to the house from Iowa. It sat for about 6 months and I traded him for a 12 Guage. I feel that I WON!!! I have big plans for it. Looking forward to the rebuild. Ill try to post pics later. Thanks for the help

Check out the part numbers from mama kaw, if I remember correctly there are three diff size seals needed, two of each. I agree, keep it stock till you spend some time on it! You wont regret it! Enjoy!

Yep true story. And yes the bike ran fine. The forks will need rebuilt. Just got done with water pump leak. Just needs some TLC.

Hey 1yearwonder sorry I was out sand blasting parts so here's the whole story. This buddy that had the bike had a wreck on another bike shattered knee, compound fracture to ankle and got in some serious trouble with the Army so he decided to hang up riding. And the shotgun that got traded was a Remington 870. He just figured I would get more out of it than he would. Hes been helping with the work on it. So far as I said water pump leaking(fixed) running rough went through Carbs(fixed) but needs to sink carbs. Forks will be next. Pulled exhaust and didn't need to. Was trying to clean up just going to paint flat black till they go for fresh chrome. I figure ill ride it this summer work the bugs outs and do a complete tear down next winter. Vin is 1615. So as you said to good to be true but its true.

OlT welcome to ZL-OA. You'll find an interesting breakdown concerning your fork springs. Some parts are hard to come by, while others are still carried by online stores.

First store to hit is http://www.mcmcycleparts.com

Is is run by a fellow member here. You may want to download the manual for your sled in the download section. No need to pay prices for manual online, when you can download them here. I like the fact that your into the unique aspects of this bike. You won't find a better bike in my opinion.

The search field in the upper right hand corner is a powerful tool to direct to the answers that you seek. Feel free to post and ask as many questions as you like. We are all united together with respect to the love of these bikes. Glad you found us and welcome!

My red 900 is # 1587 so they may have been made in the same week! Like I said earlier, if there is anything you need bro just ask. Sounds like you have good mechanical skills so you are going to do just fine getting that baby road worthy. As others mentioned, carbs and fuel tap are very important items to get right because these bikes will hydro lock in a minute if not correct and can possibly bend a rod. Post pics up as soon as you can...we love pics!!!

Sure thing I'm going to order the exhaust gaskets and get it back together so it will look the way it did when I got it. With exception of painted exhaust. And ill post some pica and believe me I will be relaing on all you folks for input. Another question did all you guys ever have any get togethers around the country???
