On the ZL900, does the chromed gas cap separate from the black surround piece? I've tried a little twisting and pulling but don't want to damage anything.
I'm needing to paint the surround piece.

Yea it does. I couldn't tell you how even though I just did mine recently,,,let me search

I had mine all apart earlier this year, so if is sort of fresh in my mind. It seemed a lot harder than it really was. I ended up using the point of a test light to push in the brass tab. That was the part that stumped me the most. When you get down to the very guts of it and see all of the channels for the air venting be careful as there is a lot of fragile stuff in there. It really only goes together one way but there is pretty much a certain order that it all has to go.

BTW, I thought at the time that I had no vent and I don't think that I did. But now I believe that the real issues was that we were running out of gas AND our screen on the tank petcock was plugged.

But, your not having that issue as you are talking about paint, so all you really want to do is get the chrome cap off and not take it apart. Mark has you on the right track, he helped me with mine and sort of talked me through it and bolstered my confidence!

It was a little difficult getting the cap back together with the spring tension. Push it in and twist it past where it should really be and it will catch on the little latches. I'm guessing if you don't get there spring latched it will rattle like mad.

The other thing that Mark mentioned was to make sure it is locking and UNLOCKING before you put it on the tank and close it. Make SURE you have it together right before you close it on the tank.

Ok guys, quick question. Does the cap have to be in the unlocked position to take the locking barrell out? I have a spare cap and surround that I want to put my locking barrell into, but it's in the locked position, and I don't have a key for it. I've tried to get the **** thing out myself, but I can't. So does it need to be in the unlocked position or do I just have agit of a gas cap?

If you can get a key made for a reasonable price I would be interested in buying the barrel from you! One of my zl900's is missing the barrel!

For what it's worth, I recently got a key made using the number on the bottom of the ignition switch for $20. From other members, this seems like a fairly common price. The first couple of locksmiths I called wanted $150-$160, so if at first the price seems high, call around.

I don't have the number for it, the one that I ned to unlock is one I got in a job lot of parts. Don't have a key for it, or the ignition to be able to get the number. Might go have a chat with the local keycutter, see if there's any way he can do it, or even pick the lock just to get it open.
