the local kaw shop says that my cdi is testing bad on one leg!!!! how can that be if the bike still performs well? what does this cdi do? he says that i can no longer buy this part. he says that the cdi is unique to the 87 elim alone. is what he saying true?? as always i thank you in advance charlie

Tell em to go smoke another one. Maybe he needs one for his bike at home,,lol

The only way I know to test the cdi is to follow the test in the manual. He sure was right about availablity, it was only made for the 87 zl1000 and has been cancelled. The zl900,zx900,zg1000 do share the same as eachother, but has to be a different spark advance on the zl1000, thats what gives it that extra grunt down low.

CDI, capacitive discharge ignition

I don't know if there would be much, if any difference to the advance curve. Mark, do you notice redline difference between the 9 and 1K? From riding a 1K many years ago, I seem to remember it had a rev limiter kick in around 10K. If a CDI is readily available for a 900 and you needed one for your 1K, I would plug one in and see how it ran.

What does the manual say about testing them?

The manual just states how to measure the resistance and the scales to measure on.

I really haven't noticed a rev-limiter kick in, but then again I haven't hit a false nuetral yet, I don't fan the clutch when shifting either, just a short blip on the throttle.

Congrats to those who know we have rev limiters! most people think its valve float when the flat line up there.
Rev limiter kiks in after 11 grand on the 900
If you need a cdi for a 1000 you could probably plug an old zx1000 right in. It should if memory serves only raise the limiter by 1000 rpm This was a common mod for drag racing way back with the 900. use the zx1000 set up or buy aftermarket from vance and hines which probably would not be an in stock part these days.

Is the CDI the ignitor, or is that something different?

I didn't know about the rev limiter either. I had thought about getting a Dyna limiter, woulda been wasted money, huh?

so what do I win?

the only reason I knew was when I had my first 900, a buddy had a 1K and we were getting on them side by side. I could here his motor go flat at about 10K and mine was still running fine up until I shifted at 10.5K.
