Hey guys, first time poster and newcomer to the site and the bike.

To give a little back story; I stumbled upon this 86 ZL600 in a local paper last September when I was not even looking for another bike (having my first child on the way) but I just couldn't resist. The bike being in incredible physical shape with only 6,200mi on the clock and asking $700...so there was no turning away at that point :).

Anyway, all she really needed was some rather intense carb cleaning/syncing/tuning, fork seals, and all the other usual maintenance items (oil, filters, plugs, coolant, etc.). So after doing all that carb work I wanted to be sure to use an inline filter as to not have more crud foul up my work, though after buying 3 or 4 different types I cannot seem to find a way to get any of them to fit!

Does anyone have a recommended filter and MAYBE a photo of how the heck you were able to make it fit??? I would be extremely grateful if anyone out there could offer a newbie some advice.

Thanks!!

I will try to post a pic later for you of how the fuel filter is on the 900 I am stripping down later today for ya.

Personally, I have used a metal filter I found at NAPA. I have one out in the shop and can get the number for you I think. It is small enough in diameter that I just used an inch or so of fuel line, the filter stuck straight up between the carbs. BUT, I quit using external filters. If you have a clean tank, clean petcock, good fuel line trust the system the way it was designed.

I am trying to trust in the way it was designed but I feel like the extra precaution is worth avoiding further work if I can help it. From what I can see there isn't a spot of rust in the tank, petcock looked great when I pulled it apart and the carbs/lines were just cleaned before the winter then drained of excess fuel. So I have taken all the other precautions I can besides the filter...I just want that filter on. How has your experience been running without a filter? How long has it been working out without issue for you?

I have been running without inline filter for 4 or 5 years now. I have my carbs off pretty much every year just because...I have not found any debris in them, only crap fuel residue.
My son also runs no filter and same results.
The NAPA filter I found to work best is a NAPA Gold, the number on it is 061506K2

Really appreciate the advice and the part number. I'll check it out later today I hope. One last thing though, did you mount the filter between carb 2 and 3 vertically, or closer to the petcock horizontally somewhere?
