another starter chain thread

No I wasnt riding it red when it let go!! It had been making some sounds on start up and went to ride yesterday(:crybaby2:) and BOOM crank then oohh the sound when it got to the broken teeth..make your skin crawl... got a temp patch set out of the 900 for now...cranks fine...but now back firing and no start...:BangHead: had to walk away from it yesterday!! Gonna FIX it today!!:pistols:

Mine looked exactly like that when it went! I was lucky and it didn't bind up. Hope that is all that's wrong Madman!!

Well that was the zg chain and sprockets...well i put the 900 sprocket and chains on and it WAS ok for a while...today went to start it and BOOM chain broke and busted a hole in the bottom out of the clutch cover:angryfire:....so I had one Germlin sent me (900) chain and sprockets...just put the chain on.and hit the start button with the cover off and seen sparks from the top sprocket, turned it over a couple more times and fired...COOL....NOT!! shut it off went to try it agin and see why there were sparks.. and the chain blew apart and some of the links hit the ceiling!!!! SO WTF IS GOING ON HERE GUYS? Im dumb founded!!! HELP!!!!!!! Vrod babe seems to think the generator shaft is bent....I disagree!!! but hey she is a gear head also! Just want to know WTF to do here!!!!!!

I have never heard of this happening on a ZL / GPz / ZZR or ZRX engine before?
It sounds as though there is too much tension being put on the starter chain somehow?
Maybe you could leave the engine cover off and try cranking her over to see what is going on - but wear safety glasses if your previous chain is anything to go by!
Good look.

Haven't looked to see how all this works but is it possible that the starter is not getting disengaged when the motor starts and you released the starter button??

:hello: The starter is stationary. It does not engage & disengage like a car. The starter one way clutch does that.

new stock tensioner...had cover off when i put the thrid chain on...like i said i seen sparks from the top sprocket then it fired shut it off hit the button agin and thats when the chain blew up!!!

I was just thinking with the cover off, you could maybe see if the chain had a tight spot or was not runing straight?
If the chain has excessive tension ? That may be a thing to look into?
Is the chain hiting something at the top - what is causing the sparks? Any unusual sounds at the same time?

I think you need to find a better mechanic......... :rotf:

J/K man, understand your frustration. Hope you get it sorted out soon. I've got a ZL900 motor you can have! Had some kind of knock in it, it was in the blue monstrosity. I can bring it up to VMD for you if you haven't fixed yours by then!

With your description I would think something internally is binding and would be taking the the bike apart and checking everything internally.

:hello: There is a company in GA that specializes in a perforamance starter chain & sprocket setup for drag bikes. Does anyone know what Co. it is.

This all started with the zg chain wich the teeth got stripped off the gen sprocket...that chain was stiff as hell when i took it off...put stock 900 chain and sprockets on,they lasted for a few weeks..then boom broken chain and hole in the clutch cover..replased chain with the 900 chain turned over few times 1 spark off chain then fired to life...shut off went to restart and chain blew apart! No sound really......This what im gonna do...NEW zg chain & sprocket, and wicks chain tensioner....dont think its inturnal...Im at a loss to what to do other than that and see!

:hello: I think we are all dumb founded over this. Even my friend Ron. He is the one that I turn to when I need to. He worked for Kawasaki for 17 + years. He said he seen this happen quite a few times on the older Connies with high mileage. He said he actually never done won in a ZL. He said they were far & few between at there Dealership in Daytona. He said they only sold a hand full of ZLs.

:hello: Sooner or later all tentioners give out & chains for that matter. He just never did any ZLs because most people who bought them did not ride them as touring bikes like the Connie. Most ZLs that I see or here about have less than 20,000 miles. That is hardly wore out. The guy who had my ZL 1 also had 2 ZL 9s. The 2 9s had less than 10,000 miles on them & mine had less than 9,000 on it. Again I knew of 2 people who logged over 100k on there Connies with out any issues. I guess it is all in how you ride & up keep in preventive maintenance. Some of it may be luck.
