    Hello ZL Brothas,

I scored a used zl900 tank on craigslist last night. The exterior is perfect, no dents. But the inside has been creamed and has thin rusting. What do you guys recommend to get it cleaned up?

I always use Evaporust and it's worked great for me. Make sure you fill it all the way up so all surfaces are covered and leave it for at least 24 hours. Strain it back through an old rag and to clean the particles out and reuse it again down the road.

Cool, great idea on reusing evaporust after straining through rag. I'm going to have to try and find an old petcock to cover the bottom as nothing else came with the tank. Thanks Maukus!

:hello: I've done my ZL 10 twice, a 1999 Driffter, a 1978 Yamaha DT 125 E, a 1974 Honda XR 75 K1 & a 1974 Honda XL 70 K0. The XR 75 was the worst. I had to do it twice. The first time after doing it I got about 8ozs. of dryed rust out. After the second time I let it sit for 2 days & it came out perfect. After doing a fuel tank you need to get fuel in it right away or it might flash rust. Here are pics of the inside of my ZL 10. The first pic shows the tank not being filled all the way to the top. That is because I lost about a half gal on my garage floor do to the funnel falling out of the fuel tank. That is why I done my ZL 10 twice. I paid $90 for 5 gal of Evaporust & $26 or one gal. My ACE harware sells it by the gal but they can order a 5 gal can. 2017-10-20-09-07-22.jpg 2017-10-20-10-02-08.jpg 2017-10-20-10-02-23.jpg 2017-10-20-10-02-32.jpg 2017-10-20-10-03-15.jpg 2017-10-20-10-03-22.jpg 2017-10-20-10-03-48.jpg 2017-10-20-10-04-17.jpg 2017-10-20-10-04-25.jpg 2017-10-20-10-04-45.jpg 2017-10-20-10-20-32.jpg 2017-10-20-10-20-55.jpg 2017-10-20-10-21-10.jpg When a store a fuel tank for a long time empty I coat the inside with about 2 ozs. of Amsoil 2 stroke oil. That way you don't have to get the oil out of the fuel tank. I just fill the tank & run the bike with the 2 stroke oil mixed in the fuel.

RJ, sounds like you have done this a few times. Great tips and pics. Amazon has 3 gal evaporust for $65 w/free shipping. I will try cleaning the tank per your guys recommendations. I don't need to use the tank right away so I will have it on standby and apply the amsoil oil too after it's cleaned up - nice tip to avoid future rust flashing. Thanks!

:hello: No problem I'm glad to help. Before putting 2 stroke oil in the gas after using evaporust blow the inside of the tank dry with compressed air. Also Evaporust will not harm paint, rubber or plastic parts. It is environmentally friendly.

If you've got a **** coating I would recommend a rad shop that can do a hot clean out of that crap. It shouldn't mess with the paint and should clean out any rust. There is a reason that tank was on the block and it was most likely it was a **** coating. Have a pro take care of it.

:hello: You might very well be right. I've never dealt with a coated tank. The only thing I know is when a tank is coated inside they only last a few years.

Has anybody used the works toilet bowl cleaner? It cleaned my tank good but it flashed over a little. Next time I’m going to add baking soda and soapy water right after the works is removed.
