1. Guest,
We need good tech writers that are willing to help out here at ZL-OA. If you like taking photos of jobs as you perform the steps on your repairs, have historical ads/documents from old magazines, or any else you think belongs in the Technical Library than you might be able to help. Send a private message to Furchin, Mudrunner88, Chris, Jarney, Wuputt, or Markus56 and we can lead you in the right direction to get started.

A little update on my ZL9 carbs that Rick rebuilt
First off,, lately I haven't been riding much due to work load
But,, I was able to get a few rides in ,,,,
My first ride was a 50 mile round trip on the freeway, traffic was paced at about 90 mph.
That was a bit high paced to do a fuel/mileage check but it is knowledge gained
The bike ran smooth as silk and always had more rpm on tap.
the next two rides were short, in town, 5 miles each and of course the bike ran flawlessly
I got about 61 miles then hit reserve. the last tank of gas I hit reserve at about 54 miles
so my fuel efficiency is much better and I think if I stay under 70 mph I will get even better mileage
last thing is the minor buzz at the gas cap is gone...
Thanks again Rick,,, Job well done!
I forgot to mention ,,, I nailed 2nd gear crossing an intersection and pulled a wheelie, Me happy!

Rick, sent you a message my friend! I’m finally ready and 1 set of carbs is boxed and ready to go. I sent you my number, just give me a buzz and I’ll grab address and all again.

I have got to stop letting these babies sit!

Same here Brad.....gotta' do my 9 again from letting it sit. I normally drain the carbs which is good enough but i DIDN'T THIS TIME. I'll be sending a set before much longer too Rick.

I can’t believe I spent all the time getting these bikes right then let them sit. I had trouble with my low mileage red 900( you did the forks on this one) as it would crank and run good then within about 2 minutes it would start to run real rough and cut off. If you let it sit for about 5 minutes it would crank back up and run like new for about 2 minutes and would run bad and cut off again. I got aggravated and just let it sit.

Well, I found the problem when I removed the carbs. The seat was pinching the supply line just enough to let it run for a couple minutes. I’m almost 100 percent sure it will run right now once I get the carbs done.

The 1000 just sat to long too. I need to rebuild the water pump as it’s leaking oil . I just let it sit and now I have the carbs and water pump to rebuild. I will get it, I’m focused again, lol

The ethanol gas today takes at least 4 months off of the sit time. I have a gas station nearby that sells non ethanol gas and will be the way I go from
You still doing fuel valves? I’ll need to take a look at mine, May can just clean it up. They started to leak gas

Yeah Brad, I wished I had a non ethanol station around me that I could get good petrol at but I don't. Yes, I still do the fuel valves and have some ready to ship if anyone needs one for either the 900 or 1000.

:hello: I pulled my carbs today on my ZL 10 because rust made its way past my Pingal inline fuel filter. Rick done them for me about a year ago. Since I've pulled my carbs I'm going to get the carbs bank rails & brackets powder coated as I did with the other 5 sets that Rick done for me. Also the float bowls need cleaned. They would not drain & I couldn't get the float bowls off with the carbs on the bike. I need to check all the jets anyway. Thanks, I will be getting the carbs pulled from the 1000 this week and get them to Rick then I will need the water pump rebuilt. I really only need a seal I believe as it’s leaking oil. The water pump itself I believe is fine as it’s cooling perfectly. It’s been 7 years since I pulled a water pump but I think they leak oil because of an o- ring? I thought I would just send it to you for rebuild while I had it out.

:hello: Man thoses black carbs look golden. :notworthy:. Rick: did you ever check into what a powder coat set up costs. Since carb parts are small you can buy an old oven to bake the parts in. Powder coating requires 400*F. Brad: Run the bike before doing anything. If it leaks only oil then the oil seal is bad. When you get the water pump out rotate the propeller with your fingers to check for tight spots. Also put the pump in a vice & see it the pumps shaft has any play in it side to side & in & out. If so the bearings are bad. I have them in stock. Shipped they will run $25 for a set of 2.

Got it, i will pull pump as soon as carbs are back in the 900 and all is running good. I can’t have oil leaking from a zl 900 that only has 6000 miles on it so it’s definitely next in the list.

Can’t wait to hear these carbs come to life again. It’s amazing how close Rick has these balanced straight off his workbench. Anytime I’ve put the vacuum gage on a rebuild of his, I barely have to touch them to balance.... if any.

:hello: After Rick done my ZL 10 carbs my bike runs better than it ever has so I didn't even bother syning them. He also did the carb for my 2002 Yamaha YFM 350 XP Warrior Sport Quad & it has never run this good since buying it in 2004.
