One more attempt to get this running correctly

I took it to my local TV repair shop and he reflowed all the joints on the board while i waited. He said he had a 944 that cold cracked the same way. I will let ya know how it goes, fingers crossed but there were definitely issues buried in that fusebox.20260723_130058.jpg
 
Nope. Still dies a sputtering death. Maybe my pilot circuit is clogged now from sitting again. When i fire it up it will behave normally when choked, as it warms up and I back the choke off if I blip the throttle the rpms drop straight to dead. I don't have my uni filters on. I think I will break down the rack again and look for why the bowl level didnt drop on #1&2 like it did on 3&4. Maybe I have 2 CDI boxes that are bad/going bad. Who knows. I think i will work on the firebird.

What could be progressively dying, first it was @ cruise speed rpm cutout, then runs till it's warm then dies wouldn't restart but would fire on jumper box. Now good battery fires right up good throttle response but dies before fully warmed. I think it is pissed about the road king and is destined to sleep in the back of the shed and forgotten about

Sorry to butt in but, my experience with pick up coils is that when they go bad, they work fine until they get hot, then conk out. Same with CDIs
 
You're not butting in at all. It sure does seem electrical. I think i will clip onto the coil pickup hot wire and see how it behaves while it is running and then dying.

Might be a good idea, I have experiences with both cdi's and pickup coils that would work fine for about 5 or 10 miles and then stop, then after cooling down would work fine again for 5 or 10 miles.
 
How did you diagnose which one it was that was causing the issue?
 
:hello: RKERG: Which one ended up being bad. Can the bike run with the pickup coils cover off. If so do the ice pack treatment. Duck tape a bag of ice to the pick up coils and ride the bike. I done this a few times with other bikes. Another thing you might have a weak ground in your wiring harness. The ZG 1000 fourm SHOULD Of BEEN ENGINERING tells his guys to run a short ground wire from the CDI/ECU to the frame right next to the ECU. He says it will make the bike run better. It wouln't hurt. Hey RJ. I am still using that water pump that I got from you. Anyway, I have had to replace both my CDIs and my pick up coils twice in the 20 something years that I have had my 900. I got both cdi's used on eBay and got one of the pick up coils from a member and another was a new after market one. The thing about the used cdi's is that you don't know how long they will last and that's why I started taking a spare with me while riding. Take care and stay safe.
 
Anyone ever disassemble a cdi and see if they can be repaired? How did the aftermarket pickup coil work out?
 
The after market pick up coil works but, the rubber grommet doesn't fit the opening tight enough to prevent some of the oil from dripping out. PIA. I opened this CDI a long time ago out of curiosity.1000000972.jpg
 
:hello: I opened up a CDI unit. It's completely sealed in conformal coating. You can buy a remover for it but I've never tried it.
